Insulation R Values Insulation is measured in two ways -- inches and "R-value." Select insulation on the basis of R-value, which is a relative measure of an insulating material's resistance to heat transfer. For new construction in Austin, minimum standards call for R11 in the walls and R30 in the attic. Although there is no way of finding an insulation's exact R-value, you can estimate the R-value by knowing the type and thickness of the insulation you have. Even though many foam insulation products are more expensive than other types of insulating materials, such as fiberglass, cellulose, etc., they are commonly used in buildings where there are space limitations or where very high R-values are desirable. Foam insulation R-values range from R-4 to R-8 per inch of thickness (2.54 cm), which is 2 to 3 times greater than most other insulating materials of the same thickness. Problem: Joe Lstiburek, forensic engineer and nationally recognized expert on moisture problems in buildings, rolled into Colorado last December and stated that, oh by the way, insulating basements with a vinyl-faced fiberglass drape is a bad idea. The vinyl facing can trap moisture, leading to potential mold problems. Furthermore, he repeated the assertion statewide, only more strenuously, during five seminars co-sponsored by E-Star and Building America during February and March.

Roof Insulation Tue, Jun 8, 2004, 16:00pm

Insulation keeps people warm in Minnesota, but does it make sense in Hawaii? Yes! Under Hawaii's hot sun, a roof can reach 150° or more even when it's only 80° outside. That heat conducts through the roof to the ceiling. The heated ceiling "toasts" the occupants who then turn on fans and air conditioners to cool off in the afternoon and the evening.

Adding rooms to house means furnace upgrade

What you need is a good contractor and the equipment has to be sized properly. For contractors, click on Heating & Cooling Contractors. To make certain that the furnace is the correct size, you need a Heat Loss Study. If the contractor is not willing to do one for you, contact Mary the Heat Plan Lady, (586) 731- 7363.
